Typical Radio Studio Equipment
Microphones
Both presenters and guests will require microphones if they are to be heard on the radio. They can differ in price with the presenter usually having a higher quality microphone.
Microphone Stands
There are two basic types of microphone stands, angle poise and banquet. Angle poise arms are used to ‘float’ the presenters microphone above the mixing desk, so as to not obstruct any crucial controls or space. A microphone attached to an angle poise can easily be moved for height, distance and visibility of the touch screen.
Banquet stands sit on a table top in front of the guests and help to prevent in-experienced users from getting too close, or touching the microphones.
Headphones
Both the presenters and guests will need to wear headphones when they are broadcasting. Radio studio’s monitor speakers disable automatically when the microphones are switched on. In order for the presenter and the guests to hear what is being broadcast, headphones must be worn.
S-RADIO and Synergy radio studios also allow the presenter to monitor something different to the guests. This enables the presenter to preview music and perform preparatory tasks without confusing their guests who may be enjoying the show before their interview.
Touch Screen
Modern radio studios use touch screens.
They are better than the traditional ‘clunky’ keyboards as they reduce noise, are not limited by the number of buttons a keyboard can provide and keep the presenters operation central to the playlist they will be following on the screen. ALL of our radio studio packages come as standard with a 22” touch screen.
Mixing Desk
The mixing desk is what’s used to control the levels of everything that is broadcast. Microphones, CD players, telephone lines etc all connect to the mixing desk for the presenter to balance.
Eight channels is probably the most popular number of channels for a radio broadcast mixer and both our S-RADIO and Synergy mixing desks are able to control functions of the software, reducing the amount of operation required, making the whole studio more user-friendly.
CD Players
CD’s are rarely used these days with the invention of MP3’s and digitally stored music. It is however sometimes helpful to simply play a CD should you want to promote a band or play some audio that is not likely to be kept by the radio station for future broadcasts.
Software
S-RADIO and Synergy Radio systems come complete with a full suite of integrated software applications designed for radio broadcasting.
Our software is used in hundreds of locations world-wide and is the most popular used software in education today.
Mic Live Indicator
Small though it may seem, the Mic Live Indicator is an essential part of any radio station. It automatically illuminates when a Microphone fader is opened, to warn those close by that any noise made, could be recorded or broadcast. All of our radio studio packages include at least one Mic Live Indicator
PC
Every commercial radio station in the UK uses radio automation software, scheduling software, production software and editing software. Modern radio stations rely on their music being available digitally for scheduling and broadcast. The S-RADIO and Synergy PC’s connect to the mixing desk so like a keyboard or mouse, the mixing desk can control many common tasks to simplify the DJ’s operation.
Speakers
While the presenters and guest will be wearing headphones while they are broadcasting, it is usually more enjoyable to listen to music from loud speakers. When two or three tracks are being played ‘back-to-back’, headphones can be removed so you can enjoy the music before the next microphone event.
Furniture
Specialist technical furniture is very important for a radio studio especially within an education environment. Technical furniture helps to hide wires, securely mount equipment and provides a table top space that can accommodate for guests.
S-RADIO and Synergy Studios feature a modern look and feel but older and more traditional finishes can be still requested if desired.

Furniture
The Clyde Broadcast Team have been designing and manufacturing radio studios and radio broadcast equipment since 1981. We have created the systems design for every national commercial radio station in the UK and in addition to manufacturing our own range of broadcast technologies and furniture, we have access to all the leading makes of hardware and software, to also offer a turkey service.
While all radio stations share the same objective - to broadcast to a listening audience, the technology each radio station will use is by no means standard. Every commercial radio station in the UK uses a different mix of hardware, software, peripheral equipment - like microphones and CD players, and so Clyde Broadcast and Synergy School Radio pride ourselves on not just selling what is on offer, but understanding what is required, to make the best offer!
All the radio studio packages on this website are designed to make radio both achievable and sustainable within an education environment and below is an example of a typical radio station and its equipment.
