Accrington Academy is currently attended by 1,050 learners. Following Government funding, the school underwent a multi-million pound overhaul in 2009. The decision was made to introduce radio broadcast equipment to engage its learners, bring the curriculum to life and enhance learning outcomes for children of all abilities.

Vice principal, Andy O’Brien, explained: “With the school being rebuilt we wanted to introduce an innovative way to engage our pupils, including those who are typically hard to reach. After hearing about the benefits of using a radio studio within a learning environment we decided this was an effective route. Following extensive research we felt a digital broadcast solution would be beneficial due to it being so simple for learners of any ability to use and the fact that it is so intuitive. As a result we decided to introduce Clyde Broadcast’s Synergy School Radio solution.”

In each individual school, there are learners with varied needs and children who are not as motivated by traditional learning techniques as others. “In these instances, children require a somewhat unique approach in order to engage them in their education,” commented Mark Duxbury, creative and media technician.

Injecting life into learning
“Radio broadcast equipment is hugely powerful in terms of its capabilities. It can deliver a sense of inclusivity as group work is promoted, this in turn positively impacts on confidence. Uniting learners to play a part in the development and production of a radio show results in a strong feeling of self-satisfaction and self-value. Radio equipment requires practical skills, reaching hands-on learners. Their confidence flourishes through communicating with other learners, and presenting on a show. Not only this but they also gain valuable technical skills via the equipment,” revealed Andy.

Looking ahead
The simplicity with which digital radio broadcast equipment can be integrated into learning is positive from a teacher’s perspective, particularly as it enables schools to motivate and include all pupils, as Mark summarised: “In subjects, such as maths, it can be a challenge to motivate some of our pupils, but I plan to use the studio to add an element of fun to all areas. In terms of the shows, as the pupils’ confidence grows we plan to broadcast more regularly.”
